Selected Text Responses on Evaluations
“Although the course had extremely difficult material, Dr. Safner did a really good job to translate the material so that we could understand it and learn it.” - Econometrics (Fall 2016)
“Was awesome, very one on one, knew everyone on a personal level and always went out of his way to help when seeking out of class assistance.” - International Trade (Fall 2016)
“Great professor, I had the opportunity to sit with the professor before he was hired and I could tell from the conversations we had while eating, and also watching his presentation to the professors, that he was going to be a good fit to the department and a great professor! Always answered questions best to his ability, even when I would bug him in his office. The slides were a bit long so I could not use them all the time for my studies. Other than that overall an awesome addition to the department.” - Microeconomic Analysis (Fall 2016 S1)
“Dr. Safner is a great teacher. Discussions once a week kept the class interesting and compelling. He gives great feedback on papers and does everything he can to help students. Looking forward to taking more classes with him next year.” - Industrial Organization (Spring 2017)
“Dr. Safner did an amazing job at teaching a relatively intimidating class. He was able to explain difficult concepts in a way that made sence. Although this class has been the hardest class I have taken at Hood, Dr. Safner made it enjoyable without making it easy, something that most professors have a hard time with.” - Econometrics (Fall 2017)
“Dr. Safner is awesome, and I would highly recommend taking one of his courses. He is a genuinely good professor that shows a true passion for economics and it is infectious, and I am not even an Econ major. He is also incredibly flexible and helpful when ever i needed help or assistance. All around awesome professor, and a good guy.” - Microeconomic Analysis (Fall 2017)
“Professor Safner can teach anyone the ins and outs of economics. I went to him countless times for help, and walked away feelings much MUCH better about the material.” - Microeconomic Analysis (Fall 2017)
“Dr. Safner is one of my favorite professors at hood. His lectures are always entertaining and informative and I find i get so much more out of economics when he is delivering it.” - Public Economics (Spring 2018)
“As with all Dr. Safner classes, he showed his passion for the subject matter being discussed. It is the hardest class I have ever taken, however Dr. Safner made it possible to pass by spending extra time explaining certain aspects of the course. There were sections above on the rankings above that should have been above a 5. The only problem I had with this course is the lack of preparation I had entering the course. The class was based heavily around statistics and some difficult subjects that Hood had not prepared me for. As someone doing an economics major I wish I had had more statistics/math classes before I took this course. Without a solid base in statistics, econometrics required a lot of catch up learning for the whole semester because of the new subjects that were being introduced every week. Dr. Safner made sure that the students that were struggling got the help they needed, however I felt as though this was a burden for him to constantly help these students that had trouble. Overall, Hood should better prepare students for this class by requiring more statistics classses.” - Econometrics Fall 2018
“I really enjoyed this class. I have taken other more theory related and discussion based economic classes with Dr. Safner but this one is by far my favorite. I enjoyed all the topics we have discussed in class and really liked the balance with the math and intuition side of the class.I really enjoyed this class. “Dr. Safner is a truly excellent instructor who is able to provide balanced, engaging lectures and stimulate economic thought in ways that feel useful to day to day life. This has been one of my favorite courses at Hood college and I felt consistently challenged throughout the semester.” -Microeconomic Analysis (Fall 2018)
